3 Michigan universities are top-500 in the world, U.S. News ranking says

A trio of Michigan universities are considered the best in the world, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2024-2025 Best Global University rankings.

The publication ranked 2,271 institutions across the world, weighing research reputation domestically and internationally, the number of research and publication citations, the amount of international collaboration and more. The full methodology can be read here.

The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor ranked No. 19 in the world, slotting in the top-25 internationally in a number of categories including arts and humanities, biology and biochemistry, cardiac and cardiovascular services, clinical medicine, economics and business, education, endocrinology, mathematics, molecular biology, oncology, physics, psychiatry, public health, radiology, social sciences, space sciences and surgery.

Its ranking was bolstered by a top-5 mark in its regional research reputation.

Michigan State University ranked No. 123. Its education and educational research program ranked No. 5 internationally, while plant and animal science was also in the top 20.

As a research institution, the East Lansing university ranked in the top 50 in the United States and No. 63 internationally.

Wayne State University in Detroit was the other Michigan institution in the top 500, ranking No. 466 in the world. The three universities form the University Research Corridor, which collaborated to produce $24 billion in economic impact through research and innovation last year.
