US Supreme Court Fenced For First Time Since Roe v Wade Ruling? Debunking Viral Claims

Videos showing non-scalable fences being put up around the US Supreme Court surfaced on social media Monday (June 17). They were shared by users who suggested that it means a big decision is coming, as the last time fences were put around the US Supreme Court was when the Roe vs Wade ruling was overturned in 2022. However, NBC’s Daniel Barnes, who covers the Justice Department, posted a photo of the Supreme Court with no fences around. He captioned the post: “No there’s not.”

On the other hand, several X accounts posted videos seemingly showing fences around the US Supreme Court. Many speculated that a decision on Donald Trump’s presidential immunity might be on the way. Plus, some also suggested that the Capitol Hills rioters could be released. Many of the posts were later deleted.

In early May 2022, an eight-foot-tall “nonscalable” fence was erected around the Supreme Court in response to protests following the leak of a draft opinion suggesting the justices would overturn the landmark rulings recognizing a constitutional right to abortion.

Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, and protests at the Supreme Court continued for several months, with reports of protests occurring until at least the end of August 2022.

Fencing installed around the Capitol after the January 6 riot remained for six months, until July 2021. Similar barriers were for the “Justice for J6” rally and again before President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union address.
