US Republicans gathered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday for their national convention, under a heightened sense of security. They officially nominated Donald Trump for president, just two days after he survived an assassination attempt. They learned Senator J.D. Vance would be Trump’s running mate.

About 2,400 delegates will spend four days hearing from their leaders and from rising stars in their party. Trump arrived after surviving a shooting at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania that, he said, “pierced” his ear. He said on social media that he could not allow a “potential assassin” to force a change in his schedule.

Trump announced Vance as his choice for vice president. Vance, 39, represents the state of Ohio. He came to fame after writing a memoir about growing up in poverty.

Trump told a US media outlet that he had been planning before the shooting to take aim in his acceptance speech at the policies of President Joe Biden. Now, Trump says he sees a chance to bring the whole country, “even the whole world,” together.
