Congress urged to pass ‘Kids Online Safety Act’

NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) – Lawmakers and state officials urged Congress to pass a bill aimed at protecting children online.

Gov. Ned Lamont and Sen. Richard Blumenthal were scheduled to participate in a news conference at 12:30 p.m. Friday in New Haven to talk about it.

They urged U.S. lawmakers to pass the Kids Online Safety Act as soon as possible.

The bipartisan bill, which Blumenthal said he has been leading, empowers young people and their parents with tools and safeguards needed to protect themselves online. He also said it will hold big tech companies accountable for harm to kids.

The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly approved the bill in July by a vote of 91 to 3. On Wednesday, it passed out of a committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Blumenthal and Lamont called that a positive step toward final passage.
