U.S. News and World Report Ranks Carnegie Mellon University No. 1 in 5 Categories, 21st Among National Universities

In the newly released 2025 Best Colleges rankings, U.S. News and World Report(opens in new window) announced today that Carnegie Mellon University ranks No. 1 in five different undergraduate disciplines — artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, management information systems, mobile/web applications and software engineering, all of which drive technological innovation worldwide. These programs train the next generation of innovators to solve real-world problems and improve the way people live and work.

Eleven additional Carnegie Mellon programs ranked in the top five, giving CMU a total of 16 specialties that placed fifth or higher. A total of 23 undergraduate programs ranked in the top 10 nationally in the survey. 

Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science(opens in new window), Tepper School of Business(opens in new window) and College of Engineering(opens in new window) are all represented in these specialty rankings.

Below is a list of the 16 CMU specialties and their respective schools ranked in the top five:

Overall, Carnegie Mellon rose three ranks among national universities to 21st (tied with the University of Michigan and Washington University in St. Louis). U.S. News and World Report surveyed schools in the spring and summer of 2024.
