Edgewood, West Shore among top 10 high schools in Florida, top 100 in country

Here’s where Brevard schools fall in the latest statewide school rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

Two Brevard junior/senior high schools ranked among the top 10 schools in the state, according to a list published in November by U.S. News & World Report.

Edgewood Jr./Sr. High on Merritt Island and West Shore Jr./Sr. High in Melbourne were ranked at No. 3 and 6 respectively among Florida high schools, with Edgewood ranking at No. 5 and West Shore ranking at No. 6 among middle schools. Both were ranked in the top 100 high schools nationally, with West Shore ranked at No. 43 and Edgewood ranked at 57.

Additionally, two other high schools ranked among Florida’s top 100, and four Brevard elementary schools made it into the top 100 list in the state.

Here’s how U.S. News & World Report, the global authority in education rankings, determined the rankings.

Edgewood, West Shore make top 10 for middle, high schools

High schools are ranked based on students’ performances on state-required tests, graduation and how well they prep students for college, according to U.S. News & World Report.

West Shore was ranked at No. 3 for high schoolers and No. 6 for middle schoolers, with a national high school ranking of 43. Its students have a math proficiency of 98% and a reading proficiency of 96%, with a student/teacher ratio of 18:1 and a graduation rate of 100%. The school has a 33.0% minority enrollment rate, meaning white students make up 67.0% of the overall student population. Overall, 12% of their students are economically disadvantaged.

Edgewood had a ranking of sixth among high schools and fifth among middle schools. Its student population has a math proficiency of 96% and a reading proficiency of 94%, with a student/teacher ratio of 19:1 and a graduation rate of 100%. The racial makeup of the school is similar to West Shore — the school has a 32.1% minority enrollment rate, with white students making up 67.9% of the total enrollment. Additionally, 16% of the students are economically disadvantaged.

Satellite High in Satellite Beach was ranked at No. 74 in the state among high schools, with its students having a math proficiency of 67% and a reading proficiency of 72%. The school, which has a student/teacher ratio of 23:1 and a graduation rate of 95%, has a minority enrollment of 19.4%, with white students making up 80.6% of the population. Twenty percent of the students are economically disadvantaged.

Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High in Cocoa Beach was ranked at No. 83 among Florida high schools, with its students having a math proficiency of 50% and a reading proficiency of 71%. The student/teacher ratio is 20:1, and the school has a graduation rate of 92%. The minority enrollment makes up 24.3% of the overall student population, with white students making up 75.7% of the population. Thirty percent of the school’s students are economically disadvantaged.

Elementary schools: four Brevard schools in top 100

Freedom 7 Elementary School in Cocoa Beach had the highest ranking of all Brevard elementary schools, coming in at No. 19 in the state. The students have a math proficiency of 92% and reading proficiency of 89%, with a student/teacher ratio of 15:1. The minority enrollment rate is 24.8%, with white students making up 75.2% of the overall student population. Twelve percent of the school’s students are economically disadvantaged.

Robert L. Stevenson Elementary School on Merritt Island ranked second in Brevard and 24th in the state. With a student/teacher ratio of 17:1, the school’s students have a math proficiency of 87% and a reading proficiency of 91%. The minority enrollment rate is 14.6%, with 85.4% of the student population made up of white students. Twenty-one percent of the school’s students are economically disadvantaged.

Manatee Elementary School in Viera ranked at No. 3 in Brevard and No. 33 in the state, with a student/teacher ratio of 16:1, math proficiency of 89% and reading proficiency of 86%. The school has a minority enrollment of 27.2%, with 72.8% of their student population made up of white students. Nineteen percent of the students are economically disadvantaged.

West Melbourne Elementary School for Science in West Melbourne ranked fourth in Brevard and 51st in the state. The school’s student population has a math proficiency of 85% and a reading proficiency of 85%, with a student/teacher ratio of 16:1. The minority enrollment rate is 37.3%, with white students making up 62.7% of overall enrollment. Eighteen percent of the students are economically disadvantaged.
