Petoskey elementary, middle schools ranked among best in state in new report

PETOSKEY — There’s reason to celebrate for the Public Schools of Petoskey after all four elementary schools and the middle school ranked as top schools in the latest U.S. News and World Report.

Lincoln Elementary School came out on top, ranking as the 51st best elementary school in the state, earning a score of 96.65 out of 100. Sheridan Elementary School was ranked as the 91st best elementary school in Michigan, scoring a 93.96. Ottawa Elementary School found a home at 171, scoring 88.67, and Central Elementary School ranked at 472, scoring 68.41.

A total of 1,428 elementary schools were ranked in the state. There is no national list for elementary schools.

According to U.S. News and World Report, schools are ranked based on their test scores and how they support students from all backgrounds.

“Half of the formula assessed the scores themselves and the other half incorporated the test results in the context of socioeconomic demographics,” according to the methodology page for the rankings.

During the Public Schools of Petoskey Board of Education meeting on Nov. 21, Lincoln Principal Jason Latz spoke about the opportunities that students are offered in the district, ranging from the Veterans Day parade to PBIS initiatives to visits to the middle and high schools.

“Great job for so many reasons, but thank you to the board, to the high school, middle school — everybody that allows our kids to do so many great things,” Latz said.

Petoskey Middle School ranked among the top schools as well, earning a ranking of 67, with a score of 92.11 out of 100. There were 838 ranked middle schools in Michigan.

“I think (the ranking) is a huge testament to our entire school community,” said middle school principal Jon Wilcox.

The rankings have not been updated for the high school list.
