A fight broke out after ‘The Game’ between the Michigan Wolverines and the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday evening and Ohio State Police Department had to use pepper spray to contain the players. A video of the incident was released by Michigan football on their Instagram account. In the video, officers can be seen using pepper spray as players and from both teams fought on the pitch.
The incident broke out at the Ohio Stadium after the Michigan Wolverines handed another defeat to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the ‘The Game’ of 2024 – this year’s iteration of the epic rivalry between Michigan State University and Ohio State University.
Michigan Wolverines won the game 13-10 and then went on to plant a flag of the Wolverines at the center of the Ohio Stadium where the Buckeye logo was placed. The Ohio State players jumped in and the two groups exchanged punched in the middle of the field.
After the incident, the Ohio State PD released a statement addressing the incident:
“Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation,” Ohio State PD said. “During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games & will continue to investigate.”
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day also addressed the incident at a post-match interview with the media.
“Yeah, I don’t know all the details of it,” Day said. “But I know that these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren’t going to let that happen.
“I’ll find out exactly what happened, but this is our field and certainly we’re embarrassed at the face we lost the game, but there’s some prideful guys on our team that weren’t just going to let that happen.”
