The Washington Commander team dropped its “Redskins” logo in 2020, following widespread protests against racial injustice. But now discussions have resurfaced about reviving the old elements of the NFL team’s former identity. The controversial logo featured the face of a Native man with two feathers and a long hair.
What Sparked The Revival Discussion?
Last week, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee had given its approval to advance legislation that will fund the restoration of the dilapidated RFK stadium site. Alongside, the approval had also permitted the NFL team and the lawmakers to negotiate the revival of the old logo of “Redskins.”
Steve Daines, Montana Senator told Fox News that discussions were underway regarding the restoration.
“We’ve had good discussions with the NFL and with the Commanders.” He continued, “There’s good faith negotiations going forward that’s going to allow this logo to be used again; perhaps revenues going to a foundation that could help Native Americans in sport and so fourth. We’re making good progress, and based on the good-faith negotiations, I made the decision support this bill.”
However, the owner of the Washington Commander, Josh Harris stated that the team won’t return to its old name.
“For obvious reasons, the old name can’t come back. The first objective is we got to start winning football games and we need everyone supporting the team and not things that might, you know, drive people apart,” he told Fox News.
What Does The “Redskins” Logo Symbolise?
Many Redskins supporters have deep attachments to the team’s emblem, which is no secret. Inspired by Chief John Two Guns White Calf, it was developed by Blackfeet Nation chief Walter “Blackie” Wetzel.
