Barack Obama broke his silence on the 2024 presidential election result after Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her concession speech on Wednesday. The former president and former first lady Michelle Obama issued a statement congratulating president-elect Donald Trump and acknowledged the importance of a peaceful transfer of power.
The former first couple got actively involved in the 2024 presidential race and hit the campaign trail for Vice President Harris in the final weeks before November 5.
The Obamas’ joint statement noted that ‘America is not immune’ to having an electorate that reacts accordingly to the country’s conditions, which led to sweeping wins for Trump and his Republican allies across the nation.
‘In a country as big and diverse as ours, we won’t always see eye-to-eye on everything,’ the statement noted. ‘But progress requires us to extend good faith and grace – even to people with whom we deeply disagree.’

The statement was released to X, formerly Twitter, shortly after Harris delivered her speech on Wednesday afternoon at her alma mater Howard University in Washington, DC.
Harris addressed her supporters and told them to keep fighting as she conceded the defeat.
She said, “this is not what we wanted” in a cracked voice when speaking almost 12 hours after the election was officially won by Trump.
“While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.”
Harris added that she had called Donald Trump to congratulate him on his win and promised to help with the peaceful transfer of power.
