Los Angeles Wildfire Live: Firefighters in Los Angeles have been battling to douse ferocious wildfires that started on Tuesday and have grown to engulf several areas, prompting evacuation of thousands, including celebrities whose residences are at the plush Pacific Palisades, which is among the first residential areas to have been trapped in the wildfires.…Read More

Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighbourhood is a hillside area along the coast housing celebrity residence and memorialised by the Beach Boys in their 1960s hit “Surfin’ USA.”

Los Angeles wildfires | Key points

  • Wildfires in Los Angeles began on Tuesday with first ripping across the upscale Pacific Palisades area. By the end of Wednesday, there were three major blazes in Los Angeles wildfires that scores firefighters were battling to douse amid windy conditions.
  • Wildfires burning in the Pacific Palisades, Altadena and other Los Angeles neighborhoods.
  • Tens of thousands of residents fled their homes to save their lives from the fast-moving Palisades fire. Several expensive cars including models of BMWs, Tesla and Mercedes were destroyed in the fire as firefighters used bulldozers to make way.
  • Five people have died in the wildfires, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, cited in an Associated Press report. More than 1,000 structures have been destroyed, over 70,000 people rescued and many people have suffered injuries. These numbers were expected to increase.
  • The recent wildfires in Los Angeles are largely driven by rising temperatures and reduced rainfall, both of which are linked to climate change. California’s wildfire season, which traditionally spans from June to October, has started earlier and extended longer in recent years due to these changing climate patterns.
  • The usual rains that help end the fire season are being delayed, allowing fires to persist through the winter months. Additionally, dry winds, such as the ‘Santa Anas’, have intensified the region’s already warm conditions, with Southern California experiencing minimal rainfall since early May. These conditions have contributed to dangerously high winds, reaching speeds of up to 80 mph and potentially exceeding 100 mph in the mountains and foothills, further fueling the wildfires.
