The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has revised its guidelines for the EB-1 visa category, which is for individuals who can demonstrate extraordinary ability in fields like science, arts, education, business, or sports. Many Indians with STEM backgrounds are shifting to the EB-1A option due to long wait times in the EB-2 and EB-3 categories, with only 140,000 Indians currently in line for EB-1 compared to over a million for EB-2 and EB-3.
Recent changes to F-1 visa regulations impose stricter limits on how long international students can spend outside the US, restricting them to a maximum of five consecutive months during their academic programs. This poses challenges for students aiming to participate in study abroad programs, internships, and research projects, potentially forcing them to forgo valuable international experiences.
The ongoing presidential battle has highlighted the need for better immigration policies in the U.S. These policies should allow more skilled workers, establish a structured process for economic migrants and asylum seekers, and assist states in managing the effects of immigration. Despite current challenges, most immigrants are expected to be beneficial to the economy rather than burdensome.
