Pennsylvania has now officially recognised Diwali, the cherished Festival of Lights, as a state holiday, following the signing of a bipartisan bill by Governor Josh Shapiro. This move reflects a significant milestone in honouring the traditions of Pennsylvania’s diverse populace, especially its substantial Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist communities.
Under the new law, Diwali Day will be observed each year on the 15th day of Kartik, in the Hindu lunisolar calendar.This legislation, which took effect immediately, means that the forthcoming Diwali celebration from October 31 to November 1 will be the inaugural official observance under the state’s new law.
While Diwali is recognised as a state holiday, it does not require the closure of schools, government offices, or businesses. The Governor’s office clarified that the holiday serves to recognise the festival’s cultural significance and encourages Pennsylvanians of all backgrounds to participate in the celebrations.
Governor Shapiro Highlights Diwali’s Symbolism
In a statement, Governor Shapiro emphasised the importance of Diwali, describing it as a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. “By signing this bill into law, we are not only recognising Diwali’s significance but also celebrating the rich cultural heritage and contributions of the Asian American community in Pennsylvania,” he noted. He also pointed to the values symbolised by Diwali as ones “that should help guide our Commonwealth.”
During the signing ceremony, which took place in Harrisburg at a Diwali, Tihar, and Bandi Chhor Diwas event organised by the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Affairs, Shapiro reiterated his commitment to inclusivity and diversity. “Pennsylvania’s strength is in its diversity, and this new holiday reflects the inclusion, respect, and unity that make our state vibrant and dynamic,” he concluded.
Diwali’s Growing Recognition Across U.S. States
Pennsylvania joins several states where Diwali is celebrated as a recognised holiday, though practices vary widely. In recent years, New York, New Jersey, and Texas have also acknowledged Diwali’s cultural significance, with certain local jurisdictions observing the festival. Schools in districts with large South Asian populations in cities like New York City and New Jersey also give students the day off, reflecting the holiday’s growing prominence within local communities.
The official recognition of Diwali in Pennsylvania underscores the broader trend across the United States toward recognising the cultural and religious observances of Asian American communities.
