Donald Trump Investigations By Special Counsel Jack Smith Cost Taxpayers More Than 50 Million: Report

Special Counsel Jack Smith‘s investigation into former President Donald Trump over the past two years likely costed U.S. taxpayers over $50 million, according to reports from the Department of Justice. Financial disclosures from Smith’s office indicate that between mid-November 2022 and March 31, 2023, the office incurred expenses of approximately $9.25 million, as reported by Fox News.

A second financial statement covering the next six months showed that spending increased to around $14.66 million. A third disclosure revealed that between October 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, Smith’s office spent an additional $11.84 million.

Expenditure figures for the period from April 1 to September 30, 2024, have yet to be released. However, based on the average spending across the three disclosed periods—approximately $12 million per cycle—the total cost is expected to exceed $50 million, according to Newsweek. The current total, excluding more recent months, is estimated at $47.5 million.

Jack Smith was appointed Special Counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland on November 18, 2022, to lead investigations into Trump’s federal cases.

Smith’s responsibilities included prosecuting Trump for alleged electoral fraud aimed at overturning the 2020 presidential election results and the alleged mishandling of classified documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Trump however, refuted all the allegations.

After a nearly two-year probe, Smith filed motions on Monday to abandon the cases against the president-elect, acknowledging procedural criteria that prohibit the prosecution of a serving president.

Soon after, Trump took to Truth Social to respond to Smith’s decision on dropping the investigation . He said that “they should never have been brought.”
