Farewell event set for longtime director of Newman Catholic Student Center in Charleston

Roy Lanham, longtime director of the Newman Student Catholic Center in Center, is set to serve as director of campus ministry at the University of Providence in Great Falls, Montana starting on Sept. 30. 




CHARLESTON — A farewell event has been organized for Roy Lanham, longtime director and campus minister for the Newman Catholic Student Center, as he prepares to take a new position out of state.

The event will be held from 2-4:30 pm. Sunday, Sept. 22, in the south pavilion at Morton Park. Attendees are encouraged to sign the memory book there for Lanham. He has accepted the campus ministry director position at the University of Providence in Great Falls, Montana, starting on Sept. 30.

In 1986, Lanham arrived in Charleston as campus ministry director at the Newman Center. He received a local Jefferson Award for Public Service in 2014 and the Charleston Area Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year honor in 2019.

Lanham played founding roles with the Student Volunteer Center, Haiti Connection, Eastern Illinois University’s Habitat for Humanity chapter, Hedwig House of hospitality for women, Charleston Area Churches Food Pantry, the Matthew 25 homeless shelter, and the Faith Alliance for Racial Justice.

In addition, Lanham worked with Father Bob Mayer to raise funds for the construction of the Newman Center’s current building on the south side of EIU’s campus.
