From Honolulu, Hawaii? Luigi Mangione’s LinkedIn Sparks Confusion

Luigi Mangione, 26, was identified as the suspect held in connection with the fatal shooting of Brian Thompson, the UnitedHealthcare CEO who was fatally shot in Manhattan last week. During a news conference, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch verified Luigi Mangione’s identity and his arrest. Maryland is where Mangione was born. His LinkedIn page, however, caused uncertainty because he was listed as resident of Honolulu, Hawaii.

Mangione earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from the University of Pennsylvania. He was born and raised in Maryland and has ties to the state, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. Nino Mangione, his cousin, is a politician from the United States who serves in the House of Delegates in Maryland. According to Kenny, the NYPD was unaware of the suspect’s identify until his arrest in Altoona, and he had no known past offenses.

Authorities told PEOPLE that Mangione was arrested on Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a person inside the eatery noticed him eating and alerted the police. According to New York and Altoona police, he was found in possession of a 9mm “ghost gun” that was identical to the one that was used to kill Thompson, several forged identification documents, including one from New Jersey that was used to check into a hostel where the shooter reportedly slept. He also carried with him a three-page manifesto that was critical of the health insurance sector.

Thompson was shot and killed outside the Hilton Midtown hotel in New York, while the CEO was on his way to a meeting for the company’s investors. Police lost sight of the hooded, masked suspect in Central Park when he rode off on a bike. It is believed by the police that the suspect specifically targeted Thompson, “lying in wait” outside the hotel while other people passed by and only shooting when Thompson got there.
