Here’s which Rhode Island colleges top U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking

The annual U.S. News & World Report list of the best colleges in the nation is out, and one Rhode Island school made the top twenty.

The publication releases its ranking of the best colleges every year based on several factors, including academic reputation, cost of attendance and return on investment.

Brown University placed the highest of all Rhode Island’s schools, coming in at No. 13 on the list.

Several other colleges in the New England area scored high on the list, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University.

Best colleges in the country, per U.S. News & World Report annual ranking

Several New England area universities ranked high on this year’s list of best colleges from U.S. News & World Report. Here are the top 10:

  1. Princeton University
  2. Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  3. Harvard University
  4. Stanford University
  5. Yale University
  6. 6. California Institute of Technology (tie)
  7. 6. Duke University (tie)
  8. 6. Johns Hopkins University (tie)
  9. 6. Northwestern University (tie)
  10. University of Pennsylvania

Best colleges in Rhode Island, per U.S. News & World Report annual ranking

Only two Rhode Island colleges made U.S. News & World Report’s national list of best universities this year.

Brown University came in at No. 13, tying with Columbia University. The University of Rhode Island was named No. 152.

However, although more Rhode Island schools didn’t make the national list, several did make the list for best universities in the north region. Here’s how they fared on that list:

How U.S. News & World Report calculates ranking for best colleges list

U.S. News & World Report determines its annual best colleges list by evaluating nearly 1,500 colleges and universities using more than a dozen categories of “academic quality,” the publication said in a release.

More than half of a school’s ranking is calculated based on outcome measures such as graduation rates and post-graduation earning rates, according to the release.

The rest of the score is calculated using data such as faculty salaries, student-to-faculty ratio and standardized test scores.
