OSU, CWRU among top Ohio engineering schools in U.S. News & World Report: See 2023-2024 rankings

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Multiple Ohio universities landed in the top 50 rankings for best graduate programs in engineering, according to the new 2023-2024 U.S. News and World Report Best Graduate Programs Rankings released Tuesday.

These include Ohio State University — ranked in the top 50 — as well as Case Western Reserve University, the University of Dayton, the University of Akron and the University of Cincinnati.

Ohio State has the highest scores in the state for peer and recruiter assessments, it grants the most doctoral degrees and has the highest percentage of tenure-track faculty who are elected members of the National Academy of Engineering (2.8%).

Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranks as the country’s best engineering school, followed by Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

U.S. News’ Best Engineering Schools rankings compare schools on their research activity, faculty resources, academic achievements of entering students and assessments by other engineering schools and employers. The methodology is distinct from the others U.S. News uses to assess undergraduate engineering programs and online master’s degrees in engineering, according to the ranking methodology.

Only two Ohio schools increased their rankings from the year before. CWRU moved up two spots while the University of Cincinnati moved up 8 spots. Ohio State stayed at the same rank as it did the year before. All other Ohio engineering schools dropped in rankings.

The University of Cincinnati had the highest percentage of publications cited in top 5% of journals by Elsevier’s CiteScore, at 24.7%.

The University of Dayton has the highest amount of externally funded engineering research expenditures, at $220.9 million.
