Trump ‘assassination attempt’ live updates: Suspected gunman charged after second apparent plot
Speaker Mike Johnson called for more security detail to be provided to Trump during an interview on “Fox and Friends” this morning.
“Trump needs the most coverage of anyone. He’s the most attacked, he’s the most threatened, even even probably more than when he was in the Oval Office,” Johnson said. “So we are demanding in the House that he have every asset available, and we will make more available if necessary. I don’t think it’s a funding issue. I think it’s a manpower allocation.”
Johnson said he met with Trump yesterday at his Mar-a-Lago resort for a planned meeting, after the apparent assassination attempt on the former president. The House speaker said he and his wife spent about three hours with Trump.
Johnson said he was sitting with Trump when the acting director of the Secret Service, Ron Rowe, called to provide a briefing within 90 minutes after the apparent assassination attempt.
“We listen to that in detail, and what I understand happened is that those agents that were with him yesterday saw that barrel of that gun between the bushes on a golf course,” he said. “I mean, you know, that’s a difficult thing to spot, right? Thankfully, they did.”
“But unlike in Butler, they did not pause,” he added, referring to the assassination attempt of Trump during a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. “They immediately pulled their weapons and fired. I think that’s why this guy, the suspect, the shooter, threw the gun in the bushes and ran. Had they not been there, had they not acted so quickly and so decisively, we might be having a different conversation today.”
