US Fighter Pilots Recalls Iran’s Drone Attack On Israel, ‘We Ran Out Of Missiles’
US’ F-15 fighter pilots recalls how they ran out of air-to-air missiles
During the massive Iranian attack on Israel in April, the F-15 fighter pilotd from the US revealed that they exhausted their supply of air-to-air missiles and were forced to switch to guns. Iran launched over 300 drones, ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles at Israel.
An F-15 fighter pilot — Major Benjamin ‘Irish’ Coffey, has recalled how he was not expecting to run out of missiles while taking on the Iranian attack.
Under orders to use every weapon available to support Israel, Major Coffey and his weapons systems officer, Captain Lacie “Sonic” Hester, quickly devised a plan when they depleted their supply of air-to-air missiles.
The pilots recalled flying dangerously close to an Iranian drone, dropping well below the minimum safe altitude for the F-15 Strike Eagle, and attempting to engage it with their onboard gun.
“You feel the terrain rush, you feel yourself getting closer and closer to the ground. The risk was just too high to try again,” Major Coffey told CNN.
US forces both in the air as well as at sea, were able to intercept 70 drones and three ballistic missiles during the attack.
This was considered as the US Air Force’s maiden ‘ real test’ against prolonged and large-scale drone attack.
The scene at the undisclosed US military base in the Middle East was equally chaotic, as air defenses intercepted Iranian missiles and drones overhead, while troops were urgently moved to bunkers for safety.
Iran’s attack was a retaliatory response to Israel’s strike on the Iranian consulate building in Syria, resulting in the deaths of several members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
