‘What are you talking about?’: Kamala Harris fumbles Fox News interview – Times of India
United States vice president Kamala Harris took her campaign into challenging territory on Thursday, sitting down for a contentious interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier. The interview came shortly after former President Donald Trump appeared on the same network in an attempt to connect with female voters who are skeptical of his record.
During the interview, Harris faced questions about various issues including illegal immigration, President Joe Biden’s mental fitness, and whether Trump remains a threat to American democracy.Baier pressed Harris throughout the conversation, making the interview one of the most adversarial of her campaign so far.
A central point of the interview was the question of Harris’s campaign slogan, “turning the page.” Baier asked, “Your campaign’s name is a ‘new way forward’ and ‘it’s time to turn the page.’ You’ve been vice president for three and a half years, so what are you turning the page from?”
Harris responded that the slogan refers to moving on from the political climate of the last decade. “Well, first of all, turning the page from the last decade in which we have been burdened with the kind of rhetoric coming from Donald Trump that has been designed and implemented to divide our country and have Americans literally point fingers at each other,” she said.
Baier countered by citing a poll that suggests many Americans are unhappy with the country’s current direction. “More than 70 percent of people tell [us] the country is on the wrong track. They say the country is on the wrong track. If it’s on the wrong track, that track follows three and a half years of you being vice president and President Biden being president. That is what they’re saying. 79 per cent of them. Why are they saying that?” Baier asked.
Harris pointed to Trump’s ongoing influence, saying, “Donald Trump has been running for office.” Baier replied, “But you’ve been the person holding the office,” and then added, “Come on, Madam vice president.”
Harris pushed back, saying, “You and I both know what I’m talking about. You and I both know what I’m talking about.” Baier pressed further, “I actually don’t. What are you talking about?”
Kamala tried to clarify, “Over the last decade, it is clear to me and certainly the Republicans who are on stage with me, that he (Trump) is unfit to serve, that he is unstable.”
This interview was a way for Kamala to woo some of the undecided voters particularly the MAGA supporters. However, Trump supporters on social media called out kamala for deflecting issues and not addressing problems that were caused during her term. Trump himself took to X after Kamala’s interview and said that the VP suffers from ‘Trump derangement syndrome’.
“She has a massive and irredeemable case of Trump derangement syndrome – So bad, in fact, that she is barely able to talk about any subject other than the man who had the best economy ever,” Trump said.
