White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday repeatedly explained that President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter because ‘war politics’ prompted his prosecution. Her statement came hours after the Democrat gave a clean chit to the first son who was convicted of gun and tax fraud charges. The press secretary further insisted that the Justice Department is not biased – something President-elect Donald Trump claimed.
Jean-Pierre was answering reporters aboard Air Force One. Biden flew to Angola for an official visit. “The president took an action because of how politically infected these cases were,” she told members of the press pool.
A reporter on the plane, asked: “The system doesn’t get corrupted by politics for people whose name is not Biden?” The White House press secretary responded, saying people are ‘twisting and misrepresenting what I’m saying’.
“I’m talking about a particular issue right now,” Jean-Pierre said. Another journalist then asked: “Does the president believe now and agree with President-elect Trump that the justice system has been weaponized for political purposes and that it needs root and branch reform?”
“No. Read the president’s statement. Seriously, read the president’s statement. He said he believes in the Department of Justice. He does. He says it in his statement. He also believes that war politics infected the process and it led to a miscarriage of justice,” the Biden official said.
The sharp questions come as Biden and Jean-Pierre over the last year repeatedly claimed that there would be no pardon for Hunter. Some of their videos, denying clemency as an option, resurfaced on social media after the president made the announcement on Sunday.
